Check out some pictures from the Provision of Prosthesis for People Affected by Leprosy in Ogun State - 2025
This intervention addresses the mobility and social reintegration needs of People Affected by Leprosy who have undergone limb amputation due to severe nerve damage. Supported by Mechelen subsidies, the project provided high-quality prosthetic limbs to four beneficiaries (three below-knee and one above-knee), prioritizing individuals of productive age.
The initiative aimed to restore functionality, improve quality of life, and reduce stigma by enabling recipients to participate fully in daily and economic activities. In collaboration with the Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) Physiotherapy Workshop in Minna, the project ensured cost-effective prosthesis production and included training on limb care and proper use.
Key Outcomes:
Enhanced mobility and social inclusion for 4 recipients (1 female, 3 males)
Improved mental well-being through restored dignity and reduced discrimination
Delivery of prostheses with features such as shock absorption, customization, and cosmetic finishing for better comfort and functionality
This intervention reflects a holistic approach to rehabilitation, promoting both physical and psychosocial recovery for amputees affected by leprosy.

Implemented by Damien Foundation Belgium in Nigeria
Sponsored by Mechelen Subsidies, Aksis Corporations, and the Mechelen Volunteers Team
In 2025, the Damien Foundation Belgium (DFB) in Nigeria implemented an Economic Empowerment Program aimed at supporting People Affected by Leprosy and their dependents. The initiative was generously sponsored by Mechelen Subsidies, Aksis Corporations, and the Mechelen Volunteers Team, whose partnership made the program possible.
This intervention took place in two leprosy settlements in Ogun State, Nigeria, Oke-Eriwo and Iberekodo. The primary goal was to provide vocational tools and start-up support to people whose conditions and backgrounds had prevented them from gaining sustainable means of livelihood.
Many of the beneficiaries were either affected by leprosy themselves or were children of persons affected by the disease, unable to afford vocational training, shop rents, or the equipment needed to launch their trades. The program was designed to help them escape the cycle of poverty, avoid dependence on alms collection, and encourage social inclusion and dignity.
Program Objectives
The implementation process began with a thorough needs assessment conducted by the DFB Team in collaboration with community leaders and the Ogun State Leprosy Focal Person. This assessment helped identify and verify the most deserving beneficiaries, individuals either affected by leprosy or dependents, who demonstrated readiness and commitment to utilize the vocational equipment to improve their livelihoods and support their families. Once verified, tailored tools and materials were procured and distributed during official handover events in the settlements. Beneficiaries signed a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure the equipment would be used solely for the intended vocational purposes, accompanied by counseling sessions to encourage responsible use and long-term sustainability.
Program Outcomes
A total of 18 beneficiaries (comprising 9 males and 9 females) received start-up tools and materials, distributed as follows:
This initiative is a practical step towards promoting dignity, inclusion, and self-sufficiency among people affected by leprosy in Nigeria. With the continued support of our sponsors and partners, we look forward to scaling this impact and reaching even more communities in need.
Check out some pictures from the World TB Day 2025
In commemoration of World TB Day 2025, Damien Foundation Nigeria intensified its outreach by launching targeted campaigns across remote and underserved communities in Nigeria. Under the theme “Reaching the Unreached”, our dedicated teams mobilized across hard-to-reach areas to conduct active TB case finding.
From door-to-door screenings to mobile testing units, our field workers supported by local health partners brought hope and healthcare to those often left behind. Over the course of several days, hundreds were screened, dozens of new TB cases were detected early, and immediate treatment was initiated.
For many, it was the first time they received any formal TB education or medical consultation. By combining awareness sessions, on-the-spot sputum collection for laboratory testing, and referrals for further care, Damien Foundation Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to leaving no one behind in the fight against TB.
Every life reached is a life saved. Together, we move closer to a TB-free Nigeria.
